I wouldn’t say the mine played out – it just became uneconomical to mine. The mine shut down due to the post WWI recession (something like 1.25 million lbs of unsold copper in the mines inventory when it closed. The Mass Mine never reopened and the west end of the Mineral Range became pretty sleepy with logging traffic and any general freight to Mass City. When the Firesteel Trestle is condemned and the west end is mothballed in 1923 the Mass City agency is closed. The Michigan Mine, however, did ship via a St Paul/Copper Range route when it reopened for WWI. Cheers, Mark Worrall
