There are sloped storage pockets on the dock. According to the book "Great Lakes Ore Docks and Ore Cars" by Patrick Dorin, the LS&I Presque Isle dock has 200 pockets, 100 per side. The capacity of each pocket is 250 tons, giving a dock capacity of 50,000 tons. Each pocket has a hinged discharge chute used to deliver pellets thru the boat's hatch covers into the cargo holds. The chutes and pockets are on 12 ft centers.
