The LS&I is exploring the possibility of rebuilding several of their surviving U30C locomotives. They are having trouble keeping the newer, leased AC44s on the road due to maintenance issues. They are looking into taking the U30s from the dead engine track, and selling them at scrap value to a rebuilder. After they are rebuilt, they would be leased back to the LS&I. This is all pending approval from Cleveland Cliffs. Unfortunately Cliffs has been brutally cutting the LS&I budget to help cover the losses at their mines in Canada.
