SAULT STE. MARUE, Ont. – Canadian National has extended the last day of the Algoma Central Railway local passenger train service between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst, Ont., from March 31 to April 29, 2014, the Wawa News reports. On Jan. 24, due to the Canadian Federal government’s decision to stop funding the ACR passenger train under its remote passenger rail program, CN announced that it would discontinue service as of March 31. Now the service will continue for another month. Passenger train proponents have complained that the announcement of the end of service came so suddenly they had little time to look for alternative funding mechanisms. The Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains has been organizing town hall meetings and contracting legislators in an effort to save the service. Among the arguments the group is making is that terminating the passenger train service will have a negative impact on the region’s tourism, local businesses, and the future of transportation in the region. Trains News Wire is awaiting comment from Canadian National.
