The snafu that is now biting the CN in the backside is that when the CN bought the WC, it was stipulated that any lines that were sold had to be profitable as a stand along business. Now that the White Pine facility is closed and E.Hunter Harrison has run off most of the local traffic, the Ashland /White Pine subs are money losers and thus, can't be sold.
Now, it would appear that the lines can be leased as the Wisconsin Northern had the ex-WC north and west of Cameron, WI for a couple of years before the sand traffic started booming and the CN cancelled the lease. However, that hasn't happened yet and I've heard the CN has pulled the Ashland / White Pine subs off of the market.
All 2nd hand info, take it for what it's worht.
