In 1995 the Union Pacific took over the C&NW, including the line from Green Bay north to Escanaba and the iron range. They didn't want that line since it was not connected to the rest of the UP system. C&NW had previously sold off the part between Milwaukee and Green Bay to the Fox River Valley RR (FRVR). So the UP sold Green Bay north to the Wisconsin Central. That left the WC with two lines east from Hermansville. The former SOO Line went mostly thru swamp, while the former C&NW went thru Bark River and Escanaba. So WC abandoned the former SOO Line portion in 1997.
The E&LS has trackage rights over the line from Wells (Escanaba) to Pembine. Otherwise their line from Green Bay to Channing does not connect to their shops at Wells.
