White Pine memory
The last time I was in the western part of the U.P. was in 1996. I remember staying overnite in some run down little motel located right on the north shore of Lake Gogebic, in Bergland. The WC owned the tracks back then that went right behind the motel along the shore of the lake. There were bats in the attic making a lot of racket, so sleep was pretty tough to come by. I remember just falling asleep around 2 a.m. when there was a deafening sound of a train horn outside. I looked outside, and with the aid of the outside yard light, I was able to see a WC SD-45 slowly rumbling by with about 6 cars. Happy to see such a humble little train, I went back to sleep, just to be awaken again at 5 a.m., by the same train returning west. When I checked out that morning, the old lady running the place told me that the train was the "White Pine local", and that it ran about every other night. To this day, I'll never forget that experience.
