I thought widthwise loading was the norm for years until E&LS got those bulkhead type cars with side supports for lengthwise loading. Until then all the pulpwood I ever saw was loaded widthwise on gons. Wire mesh was sometimes used to hold the top levels of the wood in place. This must have been time consuming to install and remove.
Aren't gons still used for pulp on the ex-Soo CN lines? I saw some bulkhead type cars on the old CNW near Negaunee which were also loaded widthwise. Wonder if they are still in service?
