You forgot when its ten below and you walked your 100 plus car train in the long underwear and Carhart's and sweating your but off and get back to the cab and the engineer is freezing and the heat is killing you and he wont turn it down. and you can only shed your coat! Next time out the door your soaked in sweat and then quickly turns to ice if your not moving just riding a car. Mercy! The tension while you wait for the detector to give the " NO DEFECTS" as your going over the detector and that determines if you will walk a few more miles in the snow. or how about getting your crew call and finding out your working with an engineer that is mad about everything all the time and is mad that the sun came up. Or while walking your train at night through Gang country 3 guys eyeing you from the bridge swearing and threatening as you douse your lamp and cut between the cars to the other side. and double time to the head end were you can at least make a stand. These can all be eased when you crew up with a non ego engineer who is a great person and you work safe and enjoy each others company the trip and 12 hour or more crew goes fast. Even if your stuck on a siding for hours. Engineers used to ask me your a foamer arnt you? I said Yea, So? I wont let any of that interfere with my job performance and safety. and be leave me there were allot of things I wanted to check out along the way in great detail but couldn't for the sake of safety. Never a problem but If you weren't disciplined it could be a problem. Ive never been anywhere in my 56 year old life that hired more grumps in all my life and there all closet rail fans just wont admit it but to their credit there unhappy as family life is non exsistant in most cases and most are not happy about that. Its tough to miss your sons football game and hear he scored the winning touchdown on the phone and your switching cars. ok enough. Loved it though at the same time Been there done that.
