By the 1980's, the cabs were stripped, and the boiler jackets were rusted away, but accesories like air pumps, feedwater heaters, injectors, etc. were stored in boxcars. Those engines must have been recently shopped when the MH&M got them. The driver tires were almost new, and all of the running gear hand been coated in a tar-like preservative. We had to take a steam dome cover gasket from one of them, and the interior of the boilers (On that particular one, at least) were spotless.
