In 1997, Canadian Pacific sold its Saulte Ste. Marie to Sudbury mainline to Genesee & Wyoming Canada Inc., which is running the line as the Huron Central.
Over the last few years, GWRR has threatened to shut down the line unless the Canadian government comes up with money for rehabilitating the track. Last year, the Canadian government, the city of Sault Ste. Marie, and Essar Steel Algoma, came up with some money and an agreement to subsidize the railroad for the next 20 years.
Since this link is so tenuous, it's doubtful it will ever see any through service.
