There were at least three such south to north connections east of Marquette at one time: The Soo just east of Gladstone, Manistique & Lake Superior from its namesake to Shingleton, and at one time a RR ran from near Lake Michigan to Grand Marais.
the key to the line running from Trout Lake to Marquette probably is a reflection of raw materials heading to the Canadian side of the Soo for the paper and steel industry.
