Per Mike Tabone:
"All of the cars that are now painted bright red are the Ex LIRR cars. They were too wide for the dock and the car department started to cut them down to size when the workers were becoming ill from the chemicals in the paint. The were pulled from West Yard about a year and a half ago and are now used for Pellet Picker Service"

Here's a pic of one of the cars they converted, you can faintly see the LIRR reporting marks under the paint.
