Iron mining used to be big even in the Iron River area. I know they were still shipping by rail in the middle 1970's. They ran a weekly train from Escanaba to Stambaugh and returned the next day with 35-40 cars of raw ore (not pellets). That wasn't much for production when the pellet plants were shipping at least 100 car trains per day. I believe that was the last place in the Upper Peninsula that shipped raw ore.
I liked to see those trains because they used a pair of old baldwin locomotives that had been re-engined by EMD. Because they looked unusual those engines were known as "hefalumps." That's a word that comes from an imaginary creature from "Winnie the Pooh" stories.
