E&LS power assignments question for Greg Bunce

Dear Greg, How is it determined which locomotives pull which trains on the E&LS? I have seen photos of anywhere from 1 to 4 units, and reports of E&LS sightings have yielded 2 units on 40 car trains, as well as a single unit (#501) pulling 141 cars. Thanks, Matthew J.
