My GUESS is that for some reason they can't take the EJ&E engines into Canada yet for some reason. 
I am pretty sure the train comes out of Escanaba, early afternoon. Runs through to Soo Canada, with a stop for customs before the bridge. I presume a different crew takes the westbound, they leave Soo Canada around midnight??? (Can never keep myself awake late enough when I'm up there to know for sure 
)
