I used to watch ore trains in the Iron Mountain area in the mid-1970's. Most of the power then was C&NW but occasionally a MILW engine would be mixed in. At first all the power was Fairbanks-Morse "baby train masters" (H16-66's). Later C&NW began using the Alco Century C-628's. and the MILW was using a mixture of F-units and GP-9's. The power was definately pooled. The only mines still open by then (1976) were the Groveland and in Stambaugh, both on the C&NW so all the ore cars were always C&NW.
