Mark:
I have some information on the engine. Built by Baldwin #43340 May 1916 for Mellen Lumber Co as their #6. The Mellen Lumber Co. operated in Ashland County, Wisconsin. They were the logging subsidary of the Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Company. Mellen operated a private logging railroad in Ashland County until 1928 when they moved their operations to Ontonagon County. I haven't found yet where in Ontonagon Co. they moved to. At sometime it was sold to the Huss- Ontonagon Pulp and Paper Co. This company had bought the National Container Corp mill at Ontonagon in 1955. The mill at Ontonagon has gone through a number of owners since being organized in the early 1920's. First it was the Ontonagon Fibre Company; it went broke and bought and re-organized in 1924. It was subsequently sold to National Container, in 1955 to Huss-Ontonagon Pulp and Paper, 1962 merged with Horner Boxes, merged into Hoener Waldorf in 1966, sold to Champion International in 1977.
I purchased a copy of the picture of #6 that is on this web site, the back of the picture noted that it was taken in the 1940's. I don't know when it was retired, I do know that by the 1960's the Milwaukee was doing the switching at the mill. Hope this helps.
