You know where Empire Mine Rd is in Palmer? Well when you go up to the crossing and the LS&I curves towards the Tilden along the road, that curve or the road is where the old balloon track was. I loaded some SSAM cars last yesterday for the CN and had some down time, and the since I had the truck I went exploring. The coal track is just to the West of the Super pocket and old pocket then gets covered by dirt, and it seams as this was where the balloon track tied into, curved by the current guard shack on Empire mine RD, and almost seam like it could have tie into the current LS&I main. Hard to say. Also I found parts of the old CNW grade with track still intack, trees and srubbs growing between. Never paid too much attention to it, cuz there where too many leaves on the trees, not there gone it's pretty easy to see.Next time im out there ill get some pics. And Mark, if you wanted to do some exploring, go to Palmer, you could find the old grade, walk to the West mabe 50-75 yards and you will run into where the rails are still intacked.
