One of the more obvious places was Durand. The infamous Junction House Hotel set directly northwest of the big diamond adjacent to the tracks. There were also other hotels within eyesight of the tracks, which of course radiated in all directions from downtown Durand. A very well illustrated book to have is called "Where The Rails Cross" A Railroad History of Durand Michigan, written by I.E. Quastler. Many many old photo's and and maps.
