Like I said, this particular pipeline has been in existence since 1953. Taking it across Michigan versus going the long way around Lakes Superior and Huron is probably shorter.
If i'm not mistaken, there is branch off that pipeline that heads toward the Soo area in the eastern UP. I don't know what kind of product it carries or where it ultimately ends up. I seem to remember hearing in the not too distant past talk of Enbridge building a tunnel of sorts under the Straits to accommodate a new pipeline to prevent any possible spills there.
Fascinating stuff, but not as interesting as railroading. And to keep it railroad related, that pipeline does enter the US in roughly the same area as CP's line to/from Winnipeg.
