The Computer System the CN Train Dispatchers use indicates the distances between crossings.
Knowing that, they can plan ahead with thoughts about where they may have to hold a train for, any period of time.
But, Bill's List is much more accurate than what the Dispatcher's Computer System has in it for the distances.
I can remember numerous times talking with a Train Dispatcher about where we would fit. They would give suggestions, and I would give suggestions. Almost always, their suggestion would be correct, for the location they had in mind, but using Bill's List we could almost always find a location where the train would fit a little further down the road, than what the Dispatcher had.
I'm sure that the distances between crossings in the Train Dispatcher's Computer System was taken from a Track Chart, that would have added a few extra feet on either side of a crossing.
