I'd like to add to Bill's comments above.
The Computer System the CN Train Dispatchers use indicates the distances between crossings.
Knowing that, they can plan ahead with thoughts about where they may have to hold a train for, any period of time.
But, Bill's List is much more accurate than what the Dispatcher's Computer System has in it for the distances.
I can remember numerous times talking with a Train Dispatcher about where we would fit. They would give suggestions, and I would give suggestions. Almost always, their suggestion would be correct, for the location they had in mind, but using Bill's List we could almost always find a location where the train would fit a little further down the road, than what the Dispatcher had.
I'm sure that the distances between crossings in the Train Dispatcher's Computer System was taken from a Track Chart, that would have added a few extra feet on either side of a crossing.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading!
