Seems like one of the best things the railroads could do to strengthen their competitive stance versus the trucking industry is more cooperation between carriers. It's been said that carload freight "pays the bills", so if you're a class one and your shortline or regional connections are bringing you substantial levels of carload traffic, wouldn't it be a good thing to work closely with them and knock off this us-and-them mentality the industry seems to be dogged by? It just seems like the railroads are content to be a niche player in the movement of goods.
By the way, ever wonder what the word "merchandise" means to the class 1s?
