Re: Obituary - Ewing Hunter Harrison
Thanks for posting, Ron. Having worked for a large corporation for 39.5 years, I have some insight as to how profits always seemed to have been more important than quality. I never knew EHH personally, nor did I ever work under his sword. But I can read, and from the reports that keep coming into railroad periodicals such as Railway Age, and Trains Magazine, I don't think he quite understood that CSX was an entirely different kind of animal to try to tame, than the other 3 companies that he "turned around!" When his ego allowed him to tell his own customers that things were running well when the shippers themselves were complaining, I have to wonder just how much greed does one man need? No one wants to die, but it's inevitable. It's going to happen. This man should have been happy with his achievements of the past, retired, and lived out his remaining time enjoying stress free living. Only time and a new CEO will tell whether CSX will be better off tomorrow than it was yesterday. Let's hope that some of the hard working men and women of CSX that have lost their jobs will be able to return under a new "boss." Personally, and this is my own opinion, I didn't think CSX was doing so bad before all this happened.
