Re: Marlette/Brown City Today
Chasing trains can be fun sometimes, and frustrating at others, especially with the operations you mention out into the thumb. There are a couple of fellows who know much more about what transpires out there than I do. One of them is Charles, who posts occasionally here, and the other is Patrick B. who is quite knowledgeable too. It is possible that there is some kind of schedule on trains moving to Bad Axe, and Vassar, but the other lines are more hit and miss. Also, even though HESR still maintains the old NYC/PC line to Millington, don't get your hopes up of catching anything going there. The last actual service to there was about 3 years ago, during a major snow storm, when the Millington elevator received a single hopper car with fertilizer. Ever since then, the line has only been used to store empty coal hoppers. No other business in Millington gets rail service, and the elevator is not compliant with the current MIOSHA regulations. The cost to upgrade that facility would be cost prohibitive compared to the small amount of car loading's that it can load out in the harvest season. So, no regular trains to Millington.
