Probably seems pretty mindless even in Kansas to the conductor who has to walk his train at night to check out the hot bearing on axle 908 or thereabouts. I'm no expert on metal stress or integrity, but at 27,000 tons, those early knuckles are taking a whipping. I wonder if failures are much of a problem in this age of land barge trains? From time to time, I'll hear of knuckle and drawbar issues on CN trains coming out of the tunnel, but that's also a 2% + grade and rarely seem to occur.
