Speaking of JAIL, the five or six hundred two bay covered hoppers that were in storage in Lansing this time last year are all gone. Still quite a number of tank cars in storage on the Belt and South NYC. Railway Age article on car leasing in the May issue said there were between 25,000 and 40,000 of these CH in storage in the fourth quarter of 2016. At that time one could lease one of these small-cube hoppers for $175 to $225 per month, currently they are in the $475 range. US oil production is up roughly 10% and natural gas 3% however more sand is required for this increase. Frac sand has more than doubled from the lows in mid-2016 as demand out strips production since many smaller outfits went bust in 2015. The industry average is 1,700 pounds of sand per foot requiring 60 cars of sand. It is expected that producers will experiment with using 3,000 per foot which would require 100 cars. The small cube hopper fleet has doubled in size since 2008.
Also the JTTX flat car that had been stored in the Hollow Yard for at least two decades is now on the Saginaw Team Track.
