A belt line would be a rail line that was built to reduce traffic off of a line and/or junction. Serving additional customers would be a positive benefit also. With one notable exception, these would be in urbanized areas or just outside of them(lines farther out would be an air line). Timing of when lines were built or removed impacts whether it is a belt line or not.
The exception being what Elba Steve has mentioned. Mining areas of larger size tended to get belt lines. So in the UP, there were some but those are beyond my knowledge base of what was.
