Was that part of the Conrail/State of Michigan takeover of the AA. I would guess the purcahse and removal of the tracks in favor of one line with trackage rights would have cost Conrail/the State of Michigan less tha having to maintain this duplicate trackage. Considering how bad of shape the track was likely, it makes sense that the ownership would likely want to get rid of the line in favor of a cheaper alternative. The GTW likely agreed to the deal so they could get the scrap value of the rail that was in place (although a few peices have been spotted still in place where the mainline was between Owosso and Durand).
