8 tanks a week sounds about right for what they got in the 90s to early 00s. I only saw one unit coal train to Upjohn, it was only 45-50 cars with a single SD50 for power. I remember being disappointed to hear there were a pair of Santa Fe 6 axles that had brought one up and I missed it! Other than those two instances, I only saw the coal come in with the regular setout on ELLA.
My dad was the purchasing agent at Georgia Pacific in Kalamazoo and they must have used about the same or a bit less coal than Upjohn. They got their coal in small blocks, mainly because the cost of reloading and moving the coal from the coal pile to the powerplant was prohibitive. Their deliveries would often get bunched up though, and my guess is that when Upjohn would get a unit train of coal, it was because the cars had been bunched up to the point where it was too much to move on a regular train. This was in the 90s though, I'm not familiar with how they've been handling coal shipments since 01 or so.
