I had the chance to stop in Durand on Tuesday, 10-27-2009, to see the material for the new OWLS (One Way Low Speed) diamond, soon to be installed at Durand. This new diamond will allow greater speed through town on the CN Flint Subdivision, while at the same time cut down on the noise and maintenance there. This type diamond has already been installed elsewhere on the CN in Michigan and Indiana.
The elimination of the flangeway gap for the high-speed direction is possible by using flange bearing for the Holly Subdivision line crossing the Flint Subdivision line. Because trains are relatively infrequent on the crossing side, the 10-mph speed will not slow down operations much. The Flint Subdivision line will be one straight rail through the diamond and the Holly Subdivision line will ride up and over the Flint Subdivision line, creating that familiar click-clack while crossing the diamond.
