This may be a stupid question, but here goes. Where are railroad ties made? They all look the same to me. Is each railroad responsible for making their own in-shop, or do they buy them from a manufacturer? Also, what are they made from? Aside from wood (or I guess cement in some cases), does it have to be a certain type of wood, and what is the wood treated with?
