Hi Dave. CN Q144 and Q145 do handle a good deal of automotive traffic, however, they also transport other commodities - Michelin Tires and Labatts beer - come to mind. I believe the contract was recently renewed for these trains with Norfolk Southern, so I would expect them to continue operating. Traffic levels have grown considerably on this pair in the last 2-3 years.
I drove by the M59 crossing the other day. Seems like the preparation work is as extensive as the crossing replacement itself!
BTW, 385 is back running again - still no 386 - but expect to see it soon. I've seen several extra 383's running lately and some monster 387's. Also, an ancient CN heavy crane with a half dozen 89' flats has been patroling the line the last few days (stayed in Mt. Clemens last night), not sure what they are doing though.
