This past weekend I did a 200 mile relay race in NH and brought the Rob shirt along to run my last leg in. Throughout the race, I kept running with the same guy from the US Coast Guard. For the first two legs he went ahead and finished before me but on the last leg I started with him again. When I told him that if at any time he wanted to run ahead he told me that he had already told his teammates that we would be running together in honor of Rob. We had spoken of Rob on our second leg in the middle of the night and the middle of a rain storm. I didn't even really know this man and for him to dedicate his last leg to Rob, as I was doing, was something that was overwhelming. There are so many people out there who give so much for people they don't know.
As I finished my leg, I was thinking of Rob and telling my team what this man just did. As I walked away, I saw a penny sparkling in the rain.
You see, whenever I see a penny, it means that someone who has died is thinking of you. (A story to share another time)But when I saw this I knew that Rob was in my presence and a chill ran through me.
This race is one I will always remember and will think of Rob helping me cross the line with his smiling face on my shirt and his great laugh in my heart.
