The story of Duke the dog...
Two days before yesterday I was taking my walk around the diverting canal we have closeby here when, while passing a metal park bench, I heard a whimper coming from the tall grass...Looking closer I saw a little light brown poodle mix tied to a metal bench but, upon closer investigation, cruely tied...All his feet, haunches and neck were tied tightly...When I started to untie this dirty and tick infested little creature, he started to lick my hand as I tried to get more than 10 knots out of this nylon rope...I know it hurt my new friend but the licking continued as I, having no knife, tried to free this little fella who obviously had a loving heart...Finally, we succeeded and he was free again...As I have two dogs in small quarters already, I was wondering what we could do to help this guy who now was following me around my four laps that I try and put in each day...When I headed back to the parking lot he stopped following me and I was able to get to my car and home where I discussed the situation with my dear big-hearted esposa...Alice started coming up with ideas like maybe we could take him to the shelter but we thought he might be too far gone to be accepted there so the discussion continued...On the way to Chili's, I took Alice over to see the sweet little guy and, low and behold, he was lying next to the untied rope waiting for my return...He even walked over to the car so Alice was now really involved...Mind you, as we learned later, this little creature had no less than 1000 ticks sucking away his life's blood. Gosh knows what else he had goin' against him but, with Alice on the trail, things intensified...We couldn't bring him to our casa, as he was a walking mess of goodness knows what that we couldn't expose to our furballs, so another day passed not even knowing that he would still be there yesterday if we did come up with a solution...Yesterday morning, I was once again taking my walk and, once again, he was lying down next to where the nefarious rope was still tied to the bench, apparently waiting for me and, once again, he started following me...Finally a decision was made!!! The rope of evil was tossed into the nearby trash can as this little guy was comin' on down the road with yours truly as we were going to make sure he somehow had another shot at the brass ring...I kept walking many city blocks through traffic, with my newfound friend following, until I came to my Vet's yard and we stopped there and waited for her arrival as she doesn't get to work until 9:00am...Finally she arrived and took one look at this little guy and you could tell she wasn't too pleased to have her Friday disrupted with an impossible task, but, after a big discussion was completed, she got into the swing of things and we decided that this fella could be saved so the biggest makeover this side of the Rio Grande started and didn't end until about 7:00pm last night. But it gets better...Mother Alice was able to find him sight unseen a home with Arhi our housekeeper and her two little dog lovin' kids, whose dog had disappeared sometime earlier this year...After all the shots (vaccinations and others), medicine, grooming and the rest of the stuff that's entailed when you bring something back from the brink, at precisely 7:30pm, Duke was deposited with his new mother at their humble abode and the joyous shriek of her two kids when they saw their new family furball is still making me smile as we speak...The kids chose Duke as his name and that is the end of this story and the beginning...Ain't life a hoot??? Oh, Duke should thank Alice as she was the wind beneath my wings on this one...Alice also knows where my hidden guilt button is...Man, can she lay a guilt trip on ya!!! JaJaHaHa...Alice says seeing the newly gorgeous and healthy Sir Duke sitting proudly in the lap of his new mistress as Arhi, Duke and I stopped by our house for the big reveal on our way to Duke's new life made her day and many to come. This was little deja vu come home to roost for us as little Luke was the throw-a-way that came our way another sunny day some years ago... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmOtWyjs8iU&feature=related
In the middle of all of the above, Alice and I ventured over to Chili's for a couple of their delicious cobb salads. Can't help but admire how anxious these folks are to please their customers. Alice can't eat eggs and omitting the egg on her salad and a cheese change for both of us was no problemo, as usual. We also enjoyed their readily refilled bottomless mucho icy beverages (agua minerale for her and 'coca lite' for me) as well as a shared cup of their decadent potato and bacon chowder and a serving of our favorite dessert, a scoop of ice cream, warm baked apple chunks and nuts in a crispy cinnamon and sugar covered crust. Sharing is good.
That's all I have time for now, so have a good one all and I'll talk to ya again later...
Adios and cheerio,
Cliffardo
