Wow, Sr. Cliffardo knows a whole lot more about the Cora than I do. The only thing that I can add, you see a whole lot more Cora and the Huichol in town than say 5 years ago, as I found out the Federal Govt. started a program to pay them to bring their kids out of the Sierras to Medical Clinics to have them checked up. That brings extra money for them to buy goods here in town. Great for the Cora and the towns people.
I second Cliffardo's opinion on their own self rule. Joe, Elena and I visited their main town "Jesus Maria" in January. Wow, the Federal Govt. has got smart and made most of that area a new National Park. Thereby skirting the sovernty issue, they let them administer the Park. They and the Huichol are fiercely proud. The Cora don't allow any Federal Troops up on their lands, and the Federal Govt. is respecting that.
Not like in the USA where there are Reservations. But visiting Jesus Maria was probably what it was like visiting the Navajo Reservation in the 1930's. Interesting but you must be very respectful including about pictures as it's their Nation there.
They are quite different from the Huichol and after a while you can easily see the difference in their colorful costumes.
The State Govt. has helped them to set up their own "fracciamiento" neighborhood on the out skirts of town. So, you see more of them. About 30 of them are even attending the State University UAN now. I almost dropped dead the other day witnessing a little 16 year old gal (my evaluation who knows how old she really was?) Cora with a cell phone to her ear calling a girl friend speaking in Cora.
"The times, they are a changin".
