Hola all you expatriate patriots,
T G I F !!! Yahoo!!! Yippee!!! Hooray!!! Another week is almost history and I have already hung out a huge wash to prove it...Gotta have something for Arhi to do later on...When it comes to ironing, I may be a man of the 20th century but I draw the line at the ironing board unless it's for putting on a patch on my favorite pair of khakis...I also do windows but only the car's and that's because nobody else does it anymore...When I was a kid I had a job pumping gas at a Mobil 'service' station when you did everything for a customer including airing up the tires after wiping the windows and checking the oil and other fluids...Had to clean the restrooms as well as that was a big thing back then...The ladies demanded it...Here we consider it a good restroom if you get a bonified toilet seat...
Yesterday was a day to remember starting out with a trip over to the coast and breakfast at the pretty Casa Manana Hotel (link below) at Playa Los Cocos where Alice had the Mexicana especial and I had the Texan breakfast which included eggs, bacon, hotcakes, orange juice and coffee...The surf was up and it was a very pretty setting for us mainlanders...After this delightful repast we than drove the course over to San Blas and drove around trying there to see if it had become something worthy of more that a little looksee and, no, San Blas is still just San Blas...A nice place to visit but nothing to make you want to stay there as far as we're concerned...A couple of pretty hotels and that's about it (link below)...We then decided that we would go back past Playa Los Cocos again as most of that ride back from San Blas is along the coast and that is always a pretty thing...As we started inland little did we know what was about to happen...About halfway back to Tepic you go through the little town of Jalcocotan (link below) that, unbeknowst to us at that time, was to play a big part in our life this fine day...After we passed Jalcocotan, we were going along singing our song when all hell broke loose in the shape of our tailpipe that hit the pavement with a tremendous noise and was draggin' along shooting sparks where danger lurks so we immediately (asap) pulled off into a fairly new Pemex station area and I got out and tried to figure out how to get the tailpipe out from under the car...I asked a couple of young folks delivering vegetables to a taco stand there if they could help me as I am not able to crawl under my car as it's too low to the ground and they brought over a jack and eventually were able to get under the car to cut loose the tailpipe and, 100 pesos later, we had the tailpipe in my trunk and were heading back to Jalcocotan one more time to a muffler shop these fellows told us about...It was hotter than hades yesterday I might add so Alice and I were quickly wilting...We pulled up to this muffler shop and were greeted by a band of young fellows drinkin' beer and havin' fun who were more than happy to weld on our tailpipe and get us back on the road...About one hour was the estimated time-frame so Alice and I set out to find a restaurant/cafe down the road, shanks mare, and on our way, Alice was stopped by a very nice lady who offered to take us both to her home and feed us but we politely said thank you but we were going to go to Sylvia'a restaurant/cafe (seating 10 at the most)located down the road and which was really the front end of Sylvia's house and so we kept on walking down this narrow thoroughfare until we arrived at this very small and spartan place, shall we say...Sylvia greeted us with open arms and told us she could fry some fish for us which is exactly what she did...She went out and bought the fish and also bought us a diet Coke and a Sprite...Alice was dressed to the 9's as usual so we attracted quite a crowd that came in, one at a time, to see 'the Grand Dame' that had arrived including the lady who offered us her home earlier...Not only did the good family at Sylvia's supply us with a generous helping of ice for our drinks but the fish fry was a smashing success, head and all, as it was served with beans and a little salad and was very tasty...Alice and I were there for about an hour and, before we left, we had to use the restroom and we were led there, one at a time, by Sylvia as it was in her bedroom...Oh, by the way, this meal cost us all of 45 pesos total plus a tip and that included the two big bottles of soda-pop that they went to buy...When we left, we left with hugs from Sylvia and family I might add...We then went back to the muffler shop where the car was sittin' ready and willin' and, after leaving only 200 pesos for welding on our tailpipe and all, we were back going on down the road...Once in awhile we need to be reminded why we came down here and just how lucky we really are to be part of this simple and wonderful country...We wouldn't have changed this day for anything...Huggin' people that just an hour before were complete and total strangers...How's that for a way to spend a lovely day!!!
