Hola Debra,
Just 'jumping in' worked for me as I had no delusions that I would ever be fluent, this old dog's choice!!! Alice approached it a little differently by volunteering at some schools around town to help kids that were taking english learn how to speak it properly and therefore pick up some spanish as well through necessity...Conversational english was right up her alley being an old newspaper editor and all...We english speaking escapees came into town with two cars, a dog and a cat and a truckload of furniture knowing nobody in our new all mexican neighborhood and we winged it at first with the help of some wonderful folks that made us feel right at home from the 'get go'...Keeping our (Alice and moi) 34 year adventure alive was why we came here in the first place...The adrenalin gets a pumpin' when you wake up in a totally strange environment...You do learn fast out of pure necessity...Don't worry about how much language skills you have acquired before you get here as it will all work out just fine...Try to get a headsup on the money though as this will prevent you from making some denomination mistakes when trading money back and forth those first few days when you're a 'tin horn' as the cowpokes used to say...
Bottom line, if you are meant to be here, the rest is a piece of cake...
Cherrio for now,
Cliffardo
