I think the key must be having someone that speaks spanish to work with. My son is a fluent speaker with a spanish minor in college and 2 summers in south america and several mexican mission trips. His fiance' bought Rosetta Stone and has done well, but said she makes Thomas practice with her and correct pronunciations and grammer deals...I was amazed at what I picked up in just 2 weeks of being in a very small town in Mexico and working with folks in a medical clinic and with a local pharmacist that didn't speak english. Within a few days, I had picked up enough to order the drugs for the next day at the end of each day and communicate how to take them with our patients...I don't THINK I killed anyone....
