hi debra and glen, i learned spanish in uruapan, michoacan. i had a student from the college of agro-biology. (i think that was what it was called) it was an agriculture college for avocados. he didn't speak english. which by the way should be a priority for you, i.e., not english spoken by the tutor.
if your serious, in tepic there is a university. you can find a student who knows his/her's spanish grammer and needs financial help with their education who will probably jump at the chance to tutor you.
books: Book 1, tests and drills in spanish grammar, authors angel/dixson (ISBN 0-13-911777-6).
Book 2, tests and drills in spanish grammer, authors angel/dixson (ISBN 0-13-911785-7)
these books were used to teach spanish by the school of international trade in phoenix, arizona.
sorry to say (cliff) you will need to avoid "gringos". you need to immerse yourself in the culture and language. buy spanish news papers, go to the out door market to shop and get to know you spanish speaking neighbors.
good luck, it was my tutor, my mexican neighbors , shopping for my groceries and having a few beers with my mexican friends that made it all possible for me to have a pretty good handle on the language. bill
