Hola and Good Morning;
I think you would be better off expecting to pay a lease of 12 months for a house rental. People are not too interested in renting less than that. By the way your plan is really
Smart. Rent first to make sure you like the region, town and neighbors.
Weather wise?
Well It's near the Pacific Ocean and during the Fall/ Winter/ Spring (8-9 months of the year) you can expect about the same amount of humidity as West Coast Cities such as L.A. and San Diego. That equates to 40%. Truly wonderful weather.
Be aware at dusk some cooler air, sometimes fog even comes over from the coast and chills off the air dropping it 20-25 degrees F. Need a sweater to protect yourselves from colds then. I caught a duzy of a cold for over 3 weeks this fall because I didn't take a jacket out with me at dusk.
Actually the weather here is almost exactly as West Palm Beach Fl. (if you want to track it), where we used to live too, excepting about 5 degrees cooler most of the time because we are at a 2700-2800 ft. elevation. It's amazing how nice it is since we are at the same latitude as Havana Cuba. The elevation makes a big difference in the temperature.
You might not want to be here in July/August and first part of September. We'd prefer not to be here then and we live here. Most Gringos live here though year round. Humidity can be 80% and get 3-5 days into low 90's F. The Monsoons thought aren't bad, just rains for 1- 1 1/2 hours per day and then it's over. Summer is a great time to go visit and stay with the kids up north if they don't live some place that's hot and humid like D.C. and a lot of the East Coast. Actually I think the summers are better here than in D.C.
Next, be aware that Global Warming is changing things every where on this planet. Some of the Gringos here have taken trips to the coast like Mazatlan and San Blas over the Christmas Holidays only to find it was colder than in Tepic! Unusual, but some of the cold fronts from GringoLandia are coming further south each winter and since along the coast there are no mountain ranges to buffer the cold, (like Tepic has between us and the coast), it just keeps coming south - like a Snow Bird.
No body talks about this, but a crucial concern to anyone retiring anywhere on the planet should be water! With Global Warming that's going to be a huge thing. How is Tepic affected? Seems were getting more rain, than 10-20 years ago, (A good thing). Plus, we have the Damn Dam projects going on just east of here. The largest Hydroelectric Projects in all of Latin America. It's about a 7-10 year project making 5 new Dams in the Sierras. Three of the new ones are already finished. So you should factor that into the equation too. Tepic has plenty of it, although our illustrious SIAPA Water Co. service is sometimes maddening (although it's pretty much the same in all Latin America from what I've been hearing). You just have to Engineer around your house water system around their idiosychrycies.
Enjoy your visit.
