Posted by MoChA [Thalia in Wind Ensemble class, trying to warm up b/w the 2 instruments she has; the trumpet and piccolo] Thalia [thinking]: Don’t screw this up, especially in front of a bunch of chauvinistic pigs like most of the brass section [out loud] Zach, play the lower part. I got the top. Zach: Are you sure you want to do that? I mean, when’s the last time you played this thing? Thalia: It’s been a minute but I can handle it, I think… Zach: If you can’t do it, don’t put yourself through it. I gotcha back regardless of whether or not you can do it. Thalia: Thank you. But I have to prove myself for this crazy ass band director of ours. Zach: Ok, go for it. Ready? 1, 2, 3; 1…2…3…4… [They began to play a small portion of No Diggity by BLACKStreet. Thalia was a bit nervous and you could tell she was straining to get the notes out but they sounded decent. When she was finished, the class gave the two of them a round of applause] MR: Nicely done, Ms. Lopez. Thalia: I told you I could do it. I don’t know why you didn’t believe me. MR: Well, there’s something you need to know. I don’t know if you could tell you were doing this but you were straining to get those notes out. And you shouldn’t have to do that. Thalia: You have to understand something though. The last time I picked up one of these things was like months ago. Zach: Mr. Randall, you have to understand something too. She’s the only band member that can cross sections like that. I don’t think there’s a single person in this room that can do that besides you. MR: Well, you might be right… Zach: Of course, I’m right. I know what I’m talking about. Man, let her be in the brass section. I wanna have some competition while I’m out there on the field [turns and look s at his section] No offense, guys…I need something a little more. I’m getting tired of battling the same people out there on the field. MR: Well, Zach, I guess since you want it like that, then I guess I can grant you your wish. But there’s a slight thing that you haven’t taken into consideration. Zach: What’s that? MR: What section is she going to play in when she’s on the field versus in the stands? And what about in the pep rallies? Zach [sat there for a minute and was puzzled]: Um… Thalia [gets up from the trumpet section and walks back to the flutes and piccolos]: Ladies, what would you like me to do? Ashley: Well, what would you like to do? Thalia: Well, I want to play both. But I don’t know how I would do that…and then what about after Marching Season? Ashley: Well, if you want to play one during Marching and switch to the other later on, that’s fine. I mean, when you think about it, the flutes and piccolos are like 21 strong. There’s 6 piccolo players, the rest are flutes. The choice is up to you. The piccs are split evenly between 2nd and 3rd hour. So the choice is yours, mama. Zach: T! I think you should do both! Thalia: Maybe you’re right. I think I’ll do it like this… MR: I’m listening… Thalia: I want to play both during Marching Season. But what’s my position on the field? What section do I belong to? MR: Well, when you and Zach are battling, I guess you’re a part of the brass section. But the two of you will take center field for that. We’ll leave a hole in both sections for you, I guess. In pep rallies, you can be in either or. Bring both instruments with you just in case. In the stands, I guess you can do the same as you would for pep rallies. Thalia: I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thank you. MR: Ok, now that everything has been straightened out, can we get back to playing this music, please? [They continued to play. About 10 minutes before class was over, they all got their band T-shirts. They were Carolina Blue. The show was written on the back of the shirts with the dates and events that were planned for the year] MR: Now listen, I do not require you to wear these when we got to games but I want them on EVERY time we have a pep rally. That’s your ticket to get out of class. We will be wearing them for the first game. And on game day, I want you wearing jeans. I don’t care if you have on shorts. Wear sneakers too, please. No flip flops. I think that’s all the announcements. Have a good day. [BELL RINGS] Zach: So you’re on your way to Yearbook, now? Thalia: Yes. You have Student Aide, right? Zach: Yes, ma’am. Thalia: Ok, well, I’ll see you at lunch? Zach: Yeah…[pulls out his wallet] get me some pizza and a Gaterade, please. Thalia: What color? Zach [hands her $10]: Um, red. And get 2 slices of cheese. I’ll meet you in the Yearbook room after you’re done. Thalia: Ok, ciao. Zach: Ciao, baby [kissed her cheek]
