My father Delwin Paul MCCARTNEY was born in Nebraska. His father Marvin Francis MCCARTNEY was born in Iowa, but lived in Nebraska most of his life.
My g-grandfather William Mansfield MCCARTNEY was born in Ilinois. My gg-grandfather David Weir MCCARTNEY was born in Tennessee.
My ggg-grandfather John MCCARTNEY was supposedly born in Virginia in 1789, but I have been frustrated because I can't locate any records for him.
My gggg-grandfather John MCCARTNEY was born in Ireland and emigrated to the U.S. around the 1780s. The ship he was on supposedly wrecked a mile off the Virginia coast. His wife and 2 children drowned, but he managed to rescue a drowning woman. He married her a year later and they had 15 children. I know the children's names.
However, I have not been able to locate any information about a shipwreck off Norfolk, Virginia, during that time period. Nor can I find any record of their marriage in Virginia. The story may be pure myth, I don't know.
So, my MCCARTNEYS came from Ireland to Virginia to Tennessee to Illinois to Nebraska.
I wonder sometimes if all of us MCCARTNEYS in the U.S. and Canada are related to the same MCCARTNEY clan in Ireland. I wish I had more information.
From doing census research, it appears that most MCCARTNEYS in the U.S. settled in Pennsylvania at first.
One interesting thing I found: there was a John MCCARTNEY born 1754 Drogheda, Ireland, married to Elizabeth HUNTER, whose lineage can be traced back to 0965! But I have no way of knowing if he is one of my ancestors.
There is a newsletter for MCCARTNEYS you can subscribe to for $7 per year at www.mccartneynewsletter.com. It's called "The McCartney Newsletter" (catchy title). It's a quarterly publication with articles and photos about MCCARTNEYS.
Do you know much of the story of your ancestry?
