This sounds very much like what happened with Mores here in Britain a few years ago (although we have always had the hard packs).
When they changed, they changed to the less strong and less satisfying type which had always been sold in mainland Europe.

Incidentally, I was surprised to find that Mores were available in Australia. Despite several visits I'd never seen them there. (Had to console myself with Cafe Creme filter cigars, ironically themselves not available here in the UK)
