The problem is that the original URL is for a webpage with an embedded player, not an actual stream link. Frankly, I'm surprised that any player would play it.
If you're using any gecko based browser (firefox, mozilla, seamonkey, k-meleon, etc), it's quite easy. In the url bar, type "view-source:http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/networks/wservice/live.shtml" Now search the page for ".ra". In this page you will find: "/worldservice/ram/live_infent.ram". To make that into a useful URL, just take everything before the first slash in the original URL (http://www.bbc.co.uk), and stick it in front of that, like this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/ram/live_infent.ram. There you go.
: I find that these days I have to `translate' URLs to make
: real audio streams playable in Winamp. For example, I
: `translate':
:
:
: which won't play in Winamp, into this:
:
: rtsp://rmlivev8.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/worldservice/liveinfent.ra
:
: which will play in Winamp.
:
: The most accurate (but cumbersome) way of identifying a
: Winamp-friendly URL I've found so far is by using Media
: Player Classic. Thus I open the `unfriendly' one in MPC, go
: to the file properties, where the friendly one is shown;
: then copy it to the clipboard and open it in Winamp. Has
: anyone worked out a quicker way of doing this, please? I'm
: using Winamp Lite 5.24 with Tara, and RP8 codecs. Many
: thanks.
