79-81 Luke is my second favorite Luke era because of the things you mentioned. It's the defining L&L era, the passion, adventure, comedy, drama etc.
I still have not seen anything from the 90's. I'm not sure that I would like a darker Luke. What captivated me from the beginning was the romantic Luke, the comedic Luke. I keep thinking about Windham's and the scenes in the beauty parlor, selling shoes, dancing to "Fascination". They gave us other glimpses of him in Emma Lutz's apartment and both of them at Whittaker's farm. Luke and Laura were at their very best, IMO, when they played romantic comedy interspersed with a little adventure. Scenes such as the sea sick Luke on the trip to the Cassadine island...those were a joy to watch. If I want to get depressed, I can turn on the news.
Luke from 96-2000 is one of the most fascinating characters I have seen on tv. I love all versions of Luke but that was probably favorite era for him as an individual character.
Thanks goes to Guza. I might have hated most of his third return in the 2000s, but he pulled off some great stories in the 90s.
I adored Claire Labine's GH, but revisiting all this material decades later, it's so obvious how much more energized, and interested, Tony was in the anti-hero version of the character crafted under Guza.
Luke was darker, wilder, more unpredictable, hilarious, infuriating, and always interesting.
