I came to Lady Gaga late as I am generally not impressed by extreme costumes and suggestive dancing and the rest of the trappings that seem to be so necessary in today's music. It was only when she started singing duets with Tony Bennett that I took notice of her, and she has shown some serious talent in composing and acting too. So, it was very sad to hear her lament the fact that the Lady Gaga character she created has ruined her life. For months she even hated her piano, didn't want to go out in public, wanted to mutilate herself.
I bring this up because it is a story of how success in the entertainment industry can be a trap to a sensitive talent In many cases, a person has to create a character to grab attention and be successful. The audience loves the character but doesn't know the person behind it. That person might be very different but has to maintain the character in public. The character gradually takes over.
I often think about Tony and Genie during the madness of their great success. They couldn't leave their houses and have normal lives. The characters were so familiar to the audience and were exposed to that audience so many days a week that there really was no way for Tony and Genie to extricate themselves except to leave the show. Even then, the characters followed and haunted them for their entire careers.
Maybe that's the reason Tony finally decided to leave GH. Maybe he just got tired of being Luke Spencer to the world.
