So, I give Elizabeth a lot of credit. She was brave enough to say that she loved this show and these characters. I think she had an all-out crush on Geary. She was in a position to do something about that and get on the show. It was probably very much mutual admiration between them, and he finally got a chance to be accepted by the Hollywood elite that she hung with. It's amazing to me that he could not translate all of that into a successful film career after he left GH in 1983.
One thing about Tony is that he kept his personal life very private. He was not seen about town being photographed with men or women. The few times he had publicity tended to be with cast mates at clubs or roller skating or at the beach, etc. The mystery about him kept him intriguing. It's hard to explain now how active the soap press was in those days too. There were weekly newspapers about soap stars. There were teen magazines about them that were on every supermarket shelf. Soap stars were mega celebrities, and Geary was plastered on every one of them. Genie was too. A lot of it was network publicity, but some of it made it into mainstream media like "People" magazine and "Us." They were on talk shows. They did promotional work for the network. They hosted the Rose parade and daytime Emmys. There was nothing like it on soaps before or after.
So, I think it is really very interesting that even after 35 years on this show and endless interviews and opportunities, Geary's personal life is still a mystery to the public. It shocked me when he revealed his relationship with Elizabeth on the "Wendy Williams Show." That was so unlike Geary to do that. But then, he loved to challenge an audience. That WAS Geary!

: I could never see them as a physical couple.
: She was always gravitating toward gay men.
: Her track record with gay men is well
: documented. Not that it mattered but during
: her stint on GH she was not at her most
: attractive and if you watch some of the
: outakes/bloopers of GH she continually
: flubbed her lines and watching Tristan
: Rogers try and hide his frustration of
: working with her is plain to see. TG was
: thrilled that ET took an interest in LnL and
: acted like a schoolboy around her. Genie
: said in her interview in Arizona that ET
: hardly even recognized her and said very
: little to her. ET was all about the boys.
: ET did give GH lots of publicity but they
: were already front page news on every venue.
: Actually, I think ET needed the publicity.
: Her career was on the downhill side at that
: time.

: I never believed one word of it. It did make
: for a great story. What man, gay or straight
: wasn't in love with Elizabeth Taylor? I'm
: sure he made a great walker and supportive
: friend. I bet they both tossed back a few as
: well. He was attractive, sexy, well spoken,
: versed in Shakespeare, knew how to treat a
: woman, was probably very doting and loved
: old Hollywood.
:
: Taylor loved gay men as we all know, from
: Monty Clift, Rock Hudson, James Dean,
: Malcolm Forbes, Roddy McDowell etc. She
: loved being around men and they loved being
: with her. I can't even picture them
: together. I can see him pulling out a chair
: and bringing her a martini, but I can't
: picture them dancing together let alone
: being under the covers.

: Wait until you see the scene where Luke and
: Helena meet. He was flummoxed...forgot his
: lines. I think he was stunned by her. It's
: not hard to believe that they made a real
: connection soon after. I remember reading
: "in the day" that he accompanied
: her to Natalie Wood's funeral. He was
: spotted at her vacation home in Mexico on
: New Year's Day. He admits now that they had
: a 2 year affair even though he denied it at
: the time. During this period, he was doing
: some guest TV appearances. There was one
: that was VERY surprising because it included
: scenes with Tony and Richard Burton (on a
: Bob Hope special). For those who came to GH
: later, it would be hard to understand just
: how impressive it was for a soap star to go
: so main stream. Even Susan Lucci didn't
: reach those heights. But Geary did. For a
: guy who never really liked celebrity and
: valued his privacy, he sure got a taste of
: it.

: We just got to the clip where the servants
: are rushing, preparing for Helena.
:
: My wife goes, who is this all for? Then
: Elizabeth Taylor steps in. She goes
: "Who is that? Wait...is that Elizabeth
: Taylor???". I said yes, and she goes
: "That's HUGE!".
