The truth is that without a romantic partnership, you are a minor character on a soap. He needed someone who would be there long term that he could work with happily and who would be able to bend to the confines of his contract. Jane was willing to do that (although it made things difficult for her when he went on break). She admitted that he threw a long shadow. Not every actress was willing to stand in that shadow.
it must be really difficult on a soap to juggle all the balls of keeping the talent happy, the story rolling, and production issues moving along without even a summer hiatus. On GH, it seemed to me that they were only willing to make concessions to a very few actors and actresses in order to keep them...Tony, Maurice, Steve Burton, and JJ. Everyone else was expendable, in their opinion. I think that that is still true today.
