a happy ending and your story ideas are good.
However, I keep thinking how Tony and Genie
questioned in 1993 if they could recreate the
MAGIC. I don’t remember their exact words, but
they met at a restaurant and discovered they did
indeed still have these characters inside them.
They wanted to continue the beautiful dance. I
think they succeeded in recreating the magic. I
still wish you could watch all of the 90’s and see
how much good stuff you missed.
Somehow though, I don’t think either of them
can be replaced by another actor. Part of their
success was the writing for the characters and
their individual talent, but I think their appeal
was due to their amazing chemistry. They made
the magic together. I think it would be next to
impossible for Genie to recreate that magic
with another actor playing Luke or for another
actor to replace the true essence of Luke.
I kind of feel like it would be an insult to Tony
too. TPTB respected him enough to give him
the ending he wanted for Luke. To recast just
doesn’t seem right to me.
I think the best we can hope for is that somehow
when GH ends or Genie leaves that their great
love story is celebrated in flashback as Laura
talks about them to someone. Her talking to
him on the phone or going to him and seeing the
door open would add to it.

: It was a different story when Genie left. The
: audience wanted her back in the role, and
: she wanted to come back. Not so with Tony.
: He's made it quite clear that he is done.
: So is Luke done too? Tony once made the
: remark that the audience needs to accept the
: fact that Luke would not always be there for
: them because his life was bigger than
: Luke's. My comment to that is that his life
: is bigger to him, but to the audience,
: Luke's is bigger. The truth is that Luke
: can be there for the audience even though
: Tony has decided to exit. So, I wish him
: well, I appreciate his many gifted
: performances over the years. He has left us
: quite a legacy, and I'm not sure that anyone
: can fill his shoes. However, I would like
: to see someone try.
:
: Years ago, when watching the film of
: "The King and I", I remember
: remarking that Yul Brenner owned that role.
: Nonsense! Many very talented actors have
: played that role over the years and done it
: very well. Of course, they had different
: leading ladies, but many were very
: successful partnerships. Is there a very
: handsome, sexy, 65+ year old man who wants
: to work with a gifted actress, and have an
: important role on GH? I bet there is!
:

: I would definitely watch that. TG is quite
: unique so I wonder if they could find anyone
: who is similar enough to him that it
: wouldn't just seem bizarre (like Jed Allen
: as Mr. Quartermaine. That was nuts).
:
: --Previous Message--
: I think we have to assume that Tony is NEVER
: coming back. So, in that case, I don't
: think that they should hold the role for
: him. I also don't see why they would have
: to do the "facial reconstruction"
: story that is just so overdone. It has been
: two years, and the audience is used to
: recasts. Luke could come back a rich man.
: Tracy could have died and left him all of
: her money setting up a titanic Quartermaine
: power struggle between Luke and Ned. He
: could be a romantic foil for Laura/Kevin. I
: realize that they don't want to invest in
: older characters, but that is a
: misconception. If they write them well,
: there is no reason at all that an audience
: of all ages would not find them compelling.
: I don't know how Genie would fell about it,
: but that really isn't the issue. The
: question is what would that do for the
: story, for Laura, for Luke, and for GH? I
: think it would enable the writers to right
: some wrongs, give Genie something meaningful
: to do, and be good for the show. I don't
: think it is like retiring a number on a
: baseball team to honor a player. This
: character, Luke, could still be part of the
: team, and I don't think any actor or actress
: "owns" a part on a soap opera.
: The trick would be getting someone really
: good who could step into Tony's shoes and
: who had some serious chemistry with Genie.
:
: --Previous Message--
: but at the same time it would be interesting
: to see if it could be done at all. I guess
: they would have to say Luke was in an
: accident and had facial reconstruction. It
: would be a really hard sell though. If it
: didn't work I guess they could say he was an
: imposter down the road. It would be a cool
: storyline either way, I have to admit.

: I love Luke Spencer. I'm a LnL forever girl.
: I
: suppose a new Luke could come back and say
: Tracy is dead or he left her because he had
: business in PC.. have some dealings w/ Laura
: and start the romance up again..I bet Genie
: isn't interested in that.
:

: Well, he is forgotten because the writers
: have
: decided to ignore his absence. The audience
: hasn't forgotten. He has an ex-wife, a
: daughter, and a sister on the current show.
: He could come back with a re-cast
: "Lucky". He was one of the most
: successful characters ever on any soap. A
: lot of that was due to TG's talent, but not
: all. The character was dynamic. The
: character was exciting. The character
: energized the whole show. They still need
: that...a well-integrated powerhouse
: character who can really shake things up
:

: I agree w the exception of recasting Luke.
: For
: a lot of reasons but the most current reason
: is he isn't relevant to Gh anymore. His name
: isn't mentioned, except as Laura' s last
: name and I can't wait to see if she changes
: it to Collins. Spencer Cassidine and Bobbie
: will be the only audible connection left.
: Unless they continue to update us on
: holidays about what Tracy and Luke are
: doing, he has been put on GH's island of
: forgotten characters.
: --Previous Message--
: Since Luke was not real Luke at the end, and
: Tony really didn't want to play him as he
: was originally written, why not recast the
: role? We have discussed this so many times.
: I don't think you can hang a character on
: the whim of an actor. First of all, actors
: don't become actors to play one role all of
: their careers. That's like living an
: alternative reality as someone else. I
: really wonder how creative it is for those
: who chose a field of creativity.
:
: I'm not an actor, but my son is. I can't
: imagine him playing one role. Tony would
: have left Luke after a few years if he
: could. He wanted to disassociate himself
: from that role, from that partnership.
: Unfortunately for him, he was so successful
: as Luke, he couldn't be accepted as anything
: else. The rest of his career was a
: rebellion. He wanted job security. He got
: that. He wanted a nest egg. He got that.
: But he smothered his voice as an actor with
: a singular role.
:
: I think that the people behind the scenes
: recognized the angst that Tony felt in this
: role. They wanted to keep him. They
: couldn't afford to play LnL in a shrinking
: budget. They only had him half of the year,
: and that affected story and story partners.
: Where does that leave Luke?
:
: I have no illusions. Tony is not coming
: back. I think that they should recast the
: role. Luke could be very changed after two
: years. There are probably several
: attractive 70 year old actors who would give
: their eye teeth to play that role. Look at
: the cast. They have recast many of the
: roles sometimes as many as 3 actors have
: played a role. Isn't that better than
: sacrificing the character or writing a story
: that doesn't fit the character just to
: accommodate the whims of an actor who is
: tiring of the role? Case in point...Steve
: Burton.
:
: Steve was a very popular actor in a
: successful character on GH. They morphed
: the character from a medical student to a
: mob thug with a good heart. Was that due to
: the changing landscape or the desire of the
: actor? In any case, he decided to leave.
: They went through all kinds of contortions
: to introduce Billy Miller in the role. Why
: not just announce, "The role of Jason
: Morgan is now being played by Billy
: Miller." Billy Miller did a fine job
: as Jason. It didn't take long for the
: audience to accept him. Now Steve is back.
: I understand that they want the actor. But
: why not create a new role for him? They did
: that for Tamara. I might add that I'm not a
: fan of bringing an actor back as another
: character. It's confusing. It doesn't
: contribute to my suspension of belief. And
: I want to believe in that alternative
: reality when I watch a soap. I used to feel
: that I could put that show on and have a
: peek into the life of a real town and its
: people. It doesn't feel like that any more.
:
: I was one of those people that felt that
: Laura should have been recast. I know that
: many here disagree, but if that had
: happened, the story would not have had to
: twist itself into a pretzel for so many
: years. It's the book that really counts on
: a soap opera...the story. The characters
: tell the story. It is about them. The
: actors are important in that they are the
: messengers. Still, it is the story and the
: characters that are MOST critical. If you
: doubt that, think about how much you want to
: watch your favorite actors when they don't
: have a story to tell. It gets boring pretty
: fast.
:
: So, my feeling is that the door should not
: always remain open for an actor who decides
: to leave. A judgement should be made about
: the character. How important is that
: character to the show? Is it worth
: recasting the role? Can someone be found to
: play the role convincingly? Should the role
: be retired hoping that the original actor
: will return at some point? I think it
: should be made clear to an actor that is
: considering leaving that the role will not
: wait for them. If it is a good character
: who is important to the show, let the story
: roll on with a new actor.

: I agree, Rose. It's sad but the fact is that
: the Luke we enjoyed just doesn't exist
: anymore. I wouldn't say he is viable in any
: sense of the word. I am not a Kevin fan by
: any means, but at least he appreciates Laura
: and her love. Luke acted like he couldn't
: wait to get away from her and back to
: groveling in front of Tracy during the exit
: story. It was so bad I turned it off.

: DVRed the wedding and look forward to

: It took a lot for me..a lot of watching the
: old Luke, the later Luke and the Tracy Luke.
: Then the fluke stuff..I watched the things
: he said about not wanting kids, cheating,
: Ethan..then she came for him again.. and he
: called her an old out grown sweatshirt..He
: was crazy in a not so pitiful way but a cold
: blooded one..that Tracy liked...He wasn't
: interested in Laura, his kids, his
: grandkids... just Luke and Tracy. I didn't
: want that for my girl. My Luke wouldn't want
: that for her either. Kevin will be fun and
: romantic like Luke but not smother her like
: Scottie, if the writers do theroir part. If
: you doubt this take a look at the picture of
: Luke in the cafe.. and picture Laura
: bringing him back to Port Charles...then
: look at her with Kevin at the hospital or in
: the bar talking about Mary Mae...or with
: Spencer...my Luke doesn't exist any more, I
: think Laura said good bye to him too.

: They were perfect together...just perfect.
: I
: couldn't watch GH today. It breaks my heart
: to think that Laura has moved on while Luke
: is still viable. They should either have
: recast Luke or killed the character off.
: I'm glad for all of you who are happy about
: the story, but I just can't get on board
: with it. I would have liked to see Denise,
: though. I guess it will take more time for
: me....if ever.
